He has nothing to lose by competing. He owns a stake in Reddit, and he’s rebooting a competitor. He wins either way, and striking out on his own has a better chance of making him more money than relying on his stake.
If he fails and Reddit “wins,” he still has his stake to fall back upon.

The human species survived alongside countless others for tens of thousands of years. It has taken us roughly two or three generations to fuck it all up in the relentless pursuit of profit.
I’m rooting for them simply because I want to see Reddit and them fight. I’m not going to be switching, because I’m basically done with centralized ultracapitalist bullshit for personal use.
These people didn’t go away. Some of them are even probably here on Lemmy, watching for anyone with a weakness they can exploit to try to recruit them.
A bunch of them were arrested, but a bunch of them weren’t. Stay vigilant. Don’t tolerate these kinds of people.

Yeah, and while I don’t have any technical qualms about the direction of Mozilla with regard to Firefox, I’m personally switching for peace of mind and because of the aforementioned inability to communicate well. I don’t like working with or supporting people that can’t just say what they mean. I mean, how hard would it have been to have a human-readable version for stupid people like me and have a legalese version for the lawyers?
Regardless, as people make decisions, they deserve to be informed. It would be stupid to decide to leave Firefox if all you knew was the uninformed outrage of the internet.
It’s mostly overblown. You can watch here or read here. The internet is overreacting again, but Mozilla has done fuck all to grasp why just yoinking understandable language and expecting people to understand legalese and draw lines to their Privacy Policy is making people upset or confused.
Imo, people jumping ship is justified, because a company that makes $37M just on investments should do better about being vocal and prescient champions of privacy. Even if their actual privacy policy is the same as it was a year ago, their failure to communicate with their supporters in a way they can understand should have consequences.
It’s a simpler animation style so don’t expect Pixar level stuff
One of the things you learn in art school is that if you aim for something like realism (or Pixar, in this case), but you fail to get there, people will notice and critique you for it. If you aim for a style you can do well, on the other hand, nobody will care that you didn’t do Realism (or Pixar).
Up and coming artists in any genre would do well to remember that it’s okay not to be Pixar or Capcom or whatever. Sometimes working within your limitations can inspire truly creative works.

It will be a truly scary time if people like Ramirez become judges one day and have forgotten how or why it’s important to check people’s sources yourself, robot or not.
It’s because it’s hard to maintain a browser. There’s lots of protocols and engines and other moving pieces; I remember when web pages would render in Netscape but not Internet Explorer, for example.
We take for granted how seamless and ubiquitous the internet is, but there were lots of headaches as internet devs decided to adopt or include different users (or not).
And now, it would take a lot of effort and market upset to convince the capitalist overlords to include something new in their dev stack. The barrier to entry is monumentally high, so most people don’t bother to try inventing something better.
Good. Sucks that it took open fascism to get that to happen, but at least it happened.
Yeah, but you and much of the business world have intelligence and strategy. Elon is the guy who thinks he can just pay some Chinese gamer to play a game for him, then pretend he did it himself; that’s his version of “brilliant strategist.”
It’s no wonder he can’t figure out how to automate anything safely or correctly, because he doesn’t actually understand how to do anything himself, and he can’t just pay some Chinese rando to do it for him.
