This makes me imagine a sci-fi scenario where it’s possible to add the ability to control additional bodies to a persons brain, probably using some kind of radio-like remote control network, but only when they are young enough to have a high enough brain plasticity. After a certain age, you lose the window of opportunity to add additional bodies to your brain.

Typically, you need to already be a member of the stores loyalty/rewards scheme, so that they know who you are before you start scanning items. And if anything goes wrong, like you try to rip them off, or a technical issue with the scanner, you get locked out from using the scanners until you call their support line and sort it out.
It’s purpose was to trigger the other carmakers to sell BEVs. It has outlived its usefulness.
I can’t remember if it was Matt Parker or Tom Scott who did a thing about this on youtube, and I think the answer was no, they just use whatever method is easiest to get these numbers, and they’re not even using a consistent methodology from one country to the next.
